![]() This pause in action allows you to hide behind cover, or be the one to shoot first and initiate combat. You can order John to move forward to the end of what appears to be an empty room and he’ll follow that action unless he’s interrupted by either being shot at or by spotting an enemy hidden behind the fog-of-war. With each level playing out on a grid it means you can get a Superhot-like effect happening by having John move forward and back between two squares and watch the enemies close in around him. It is a strategy game, but every decision you make for John is broken down to the millisecond, and your enemies move at the same time as John. John Wick is a seemingly unstoppable force and to portray that Bithell Games have created something that sits somewhere between an XCOM game and Superhot. In the films, John Wick moves pretty constantly and strikes with precision as he takes down his many, many enemies. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite hit all the marks to be a true John Wick experience. His answer is a smart one, and better than simply an FPS that could be made as a cheap tie-in to the films. So how do you adapt adrenaline and the smart action that is portrayed in a John Wick video game? A question I’m sure Mike Bithell, the lead at Bithell Games discussed when making John Wick Hex. I adored John Wick 3: Parabellum which released earlier this year and the thing about the John Wick films is they’re pure adrenaline. Good Shepherd Entertainment provided us with a John Wick Hex PS4 code for review purposes.John Wick films are the best action films we’re getting at the moment. As such, I?ll split the difference, and say that John Wick Hex is a solid strategic action game that?s great if you?re in the mood for skulking around in stylish shadows and killing lots and lots of bad guys. I?d feel much more confident in saying it?s not the best Mike Bithell game possible, but I imagine that?s a much less meaningful statement for most people, judging by box office totals compared to the broader cultural impact of Thomas Was Alone. Luckily, the world around you pauses as you consider your next move (shades of Superhot), but that only adds to the suspense, as you try to figure out how to shoot multiple enemies converging at you from different angles.ĭoes this make for a faithful representation of John Wick? As I said, I have no idea. This strategy extends into other facets of the game, too - different poses allow you to move in different ways, and you need to constantly be thinking about the angles at which you?re exposed. Rather, you have to pick up guns as you go along, and when you run out of bullets, you have to start using fists to make your enemies drop their guns. It?s not just a matter of emptying out your clip and reloading. That said, you?ve got to be strategic about using that firepower. The game is too stylish to be described as bloody, since there are shadows everywhere and your enemies crumple to the ground in artful poses, but the body count here is astronomical, and the game doesn?t shy away from supplying you with all the firepower you need. As you go through each level, your goal is to kill everyone who stands between you and the exit. ![]() Like, a lot more (which I assume is in line with the movies). ![]() Of course, John Wick Hex involves much more shooting. They?re both top-down games where stealth is pretty important, and you need to plan out your next moves as you go along. In fact, the Volume comparison goes even beyond that, since the two games are kind of similar. That, more or less, sums up my feelings towards John Wick Hex, too: it?s good for what it is, but I don?t think it?s a must-buy like either of those other games I mentioned above. I should have remembered, however, that he was also the man behind Volume - which I certainly found to be good enough, but not something that?s stayed with me ever since. Knowing Bithell had worked on this game, too, made me keen to check it out. Bithell is the man behind Thomas Was Alone and Subsurface Circular, which are two games I hold in very high regard. No, what really got me interested in John Wick Hex was the fact it was developed by Mike Bithell. Also, I think there may be three of them? Literally the only things I know about them are that they star Keanu Reeves, and they?re action films. See, I?ve never seen any of the John Wick movies. I was really excited to play John Wick Hex, but not for the reasons you might expect.
